We Collectively Need to Fall In Love With Music Again
The Weekly Vibes by SND/SYS šš§
Wassup Yāall,
Welcome to another edition of The Weekly Vibes by SND/SYS šš§, Weāre back this week to share some great music and introduce our new segment āHear Me Outā. This week, we discuss if people are genuinely over the nightclub scene or if they actually just need to fall in love with music again.
Hear Me Out
The Golden Age vs. Now The internet was the best thing to happen to music. Social Media might be the worst thing. The apps we spend time endlessly scrolling on have reduced our attention spans to that of squirrels, and it shows in how we consume music.
The Death of Organic Music Discovery We don't live with songs anymore; we make TikTok dances for a week and move on to the next thing. There's no time for a song to exist in our real-life experiences like parties and nightclubs. In the year 1 BC (aka 2019), we used to hear a song at a party, and the experience in that moment made the song ten times better. Then you'd want to hear it again at another function, and another, and all of a sudden, you had a song of the summer like Rema's "Dumebi".
The Current Nightlife Scene Collectively, I think we were all more "present" in nightclubs aside from showing off the bottles you bought on the 'gram. Now people spend more time trying to capture the moment than experience it. Girls just stand in sections and look at purses they want someone to buy them. Guys constantly record other guys spending money to make it seem like they're rich by association. Meanwhile, Instagram influencers with no music taste are behind the decks playing every track on their Spotify "Liked Songs" playlist with no understanding of why BPM is important. How could they when the sync button makes everything so easy? It's a tragic state of affairs, but all is not lost. We just need to fall in love with music again.
How to Reconnect with Music: A Four-Step Guide
Be Present in the Moment Be present in the social gatherings you attend. Music is bound to be played, and maybe you might notice yourself swaying side to side a bit more when a song comes on; maybe you might even bust a blank! Maybe at the very moment a song is playing, you saw that girl/guy you're attracted to give you the sexy eyes, and now's your chance to go over and shoot your shot. Get off your phones at events, enjoy the moment, and experience it with others.
Demand Better Quality Hold DJs and Promoters accountable. If the DJ played a bad song, give an obvious negative reaction. If they're playing well, give an even more obvious positive reaction. If the music was bad the whole night, let the promoter know! If they actually care about your patronage, they'll listen and try to make the party better next time. If they tell you to fuck off, don't go back.
Practice Active Listening Stop consuming music the way you consume social media content. You need to LISTEN to music, not just hear it while aimlessly scrolling. The definition of "listen" is "to give one's attention to a sound." The term "passive listener" doesn't even make sense then. We need to give our attention to the music. Listen to an album in FULL! Let yourself dance or move or respond in whatever way feels natural. Read the lyrics to the songs you like the sound of. Then search for more songs from that artist or more songs from that sub-genre. Be curious, be open-minded.
Join or Create a Music Community Share your music taste with others. That sounds obvious coming from us, but we promise it really works. The more music you share with others, the more you'll get in return. It's also an easy method to develop deeper relationships with your friends and acquaintances. You become more connected through songs, and the memories you make will be scored by them too.
Give it a shot, and happy listening. - Gaellan
Pickās of the Week
āWhereād All The Time Go?ā By Dr. Dog
Despite my reluctance toward TikTok and the corny trends that flourish there, every once in a while the primarily Gen Z app will revive an older song that deserves more recognition. In this case, I got to rediscover this indie banger from Dr. Dog called āWhereād All The Time Go?ā. Itās a song you felt like youāve heard even if you havenāt. If you had to pick a song to describe the feeling of nostalgia, I couldnāt think of a better one. The title says it all. - Gaellan
āGlorioso Santo Antonioā by Antonio Carlos & Jacafi
These 2 guys looked up to the sky, asked the most high for guidance and in return, they got to make this song. This story of a woman praising her love to Saint Antonio, a figure in Brazilian Catholicism, but ultimately leaves with her other lover, perfectly displays the power that religion can have on us, but our weaknesses also get the best of us humans.
This is why they say music knows no bound, cause regardless of me not speaking the language, every time I hear the song it feels good. You hear it and just wanna move and scream the words out loud! Let the music take you awayyy. Inhale a deep breath and enjoy this amazing record coming from the holy land of Brazil. - Jay
āThong Songā by Sisqó
This song is one big Michael bay movie. Violins enter as the song starts and youāre on one big g-string ride. That breakdown 2:40 into him screaming āBABY⦠THAT THONGā at obscenely passionate levels is reminiscent of when the Autobots raised Optimus Prime from the dead and they save the day. Oh to be outside when this shit dropped. 4x GRAMMY NOMINATIONS - argue with your grandma. Mamba out. - Aaron
