Is 'Chromakopia' Tyler's Mid Life Crisis Album?

The Weekly Vibes by SND/SYS šŸŒšŸŽ§

Hey,

Welcome back to another edition of The Weekly Vibes by SND/SYS šŸŒšŸŽ§. For this week’s ā€˜Hear Me out’ , we asked our friends how they felt about Tyler, the Creator’s ā€˜Chromakopia’.

Hear Me Out

Initial thoughts?

JG: Interesting sounds so far, he definitely has a sweet spot with the choice of key notes (I can’t knock it). I can’t fully relate to the content matter…gonna have to give it another spin for sure. Favourite song so far is ā€œI Killed Youā€.

ALW: I like when he leans fully into making some beautiful music. When he tries to do the fun Neptunes sounding stuff, it’s hit or miss for me. Even if it is a hit, it might not get replayed. I’d prob drop it between 7-7.5/10 after first listen

JG: Riiiight! The sound overall is a bit twisted imo. It isn’t as direct as ā€˜IGOR’ or Flower Boy or even ā€˜Call Me If You Get Lost’. It doesn’t seem to follow a constant mood.

GB: Still listening but I love it thus far. It feels like his version of Ye’s ā€˜Life of Pablo’. It sounds like a mix of Wolf and Cherry Bomb. Balloon is f*cking crazy. I don’t think people are going to like this immediately especially if you’re a late Tyler fan.

AO: He’s talking on some of these tracks. Notably ā€˜Darling, Iā€ and ā€˜Hey Jane’. ā€˜Sticky’ 'feels like the single (he should’ve left the switch for Weezy to kill). I like how he judges others then judges himself on that Mask song.

Is Chromakopia Tyler’s mid life crisis’ album?

JG: Saw the topic online. They get the sense that he feels like his environment doesn’t act like him. They are living their lives and he’s still single with a pregnancy scare. Then again, he’s only 33.

GB: That’s the main reason why I compare the project to Life of Pablo.

AO: There is also him leaning into the fact that he’ll always be alone because:

  1. He chooses music over settling down and making a family (ā€œNobody could fulfill me like this music shit does So I'll be lonely with these Grammys when it's all said and done, c'mon (Oh)ā€ - Darling, I)

  2. He can’t find 1 person that has everything he looks for in a partner (so he has multiple šŸ˜‚)

AO: You really only start coming to the above realization once you hit your 30s. Make babies or make history. It’s very hard to do both. Back to the project, I think it’s production that’s bothering me. What about y’all?

JG: Agreed! The keys change so much, it’s almost like he wants me to know he understands chords better than me lol

ALW: I agree with the production. I think his production style is divisive, you either love or hate it and I bounce between liking and not liking it.

JG: That part

Ratings?

ALW: Just listened again this morning, I think the score goes up to a 7.5-8 for me

GB: šŸ«£ Need more time to sit with it but right now it’s an 8/10

JG: After my first listen, it’s a 7.8/10 to me

AO: ā€œGrownā€ raps (bro is toxic but uses black excellence/spirituality vernacular to mask it), happy production. At least he knows, who he is. 6/10 for me.

Picks of the Week

  • ā€œOver the Moonā€ by Asi Kemera

This song is simply beautiful, the voice and the tone and production all merge together so well. — feels like the sun setting or a beautiful sunny afternoon…preferably during the summer but the fall could work too. - Jay

  • ā€œPressureā€ by Renao

Last week we spoke about sharing music with others, so my pick of the week is a song a friend shared with me earlier this year (Shout out to V for putting me on šŸ™šŸ½). This song is immediately captivating. Excellent production and great songwriting by Renao. If you like Alt-R&B, this is definitely your vibe. Enjoy! - Gaellan

  • ā€œFamily Tiesā€ by Icewear Mezzo

Vezzo got his son and daughter going back and forth on here like Styles and Jada. Inshallah the money run in the family - Aaron

Albums/EPs You Need to Hear

  • ā€˜Indigo’ by Jay Glavany

A drop from earlier in the year but feels amazing to listen to as the season changes. Join Jay on a voyage of self-exploration. A 3-track project that concisely conveys an impactful message for all to relate to.
